Edelweiss Wood Flooring was born in Switzerland in 1995 as a dream of Reto & Marie Gamweger. Reto was a trained furniture maker and Marie an American transplant in Zurich. They discovered wide plank engineered flooring in Europe and they saw an opportunity to introduce it in the United States, where solid “sand and finish” wood flooring was used exclusively. We consider ourselves pioneers in engineered flooring, and have sought out flooring manufacturers that use the most advanced technologies to produce floors that are both high quality and beautiful looking. Over twenty years later our experienced team is still sharing our love for timeless wood flooring of all types.
When Edelweiss first opened its doors, technology in the engineered flooring industry was improving rapidly. The Gamweger’s wanted to find a flooring product that was built to handle humidity or the lack thereof in Telluride’s case. The climate in Colorado is extremely dry and there are special challenges to prepare and install wood floors. One must take caution to install over the top of in-floor heating systems, which can cause the floor to warp, buckle or crack if you are using the wrong materials. At the time European manufacturers were exclusively creating a three-layer wood system using the most advance technologies, which resulted in a stable and versatile wood flooring product that confronted the humidity problem. In this system three pieces of solid wood are attached together with the middle section turned at a 90-degree angle, which allows for significantly less movement than the solid wood floor when faced with humidity and temperature changes. The 3-layer flooring used in combination with a glue down installation using an elastic and water-proof glue, rather than a nail down installation, allows for the flooring to expand or shrink as the humidity changes.
Over the years, we have worked with visionaries like Schotten-Hansen, who have created some of the most beautiful engineered flooring, stair details and custom millwork that we have seen. We also now work with several domestic suppliers who offer both high-performance engineered flooring and solid wood flooring products. Our twenty years of experience and range of products allow us to find beautiful floors for discerning clients of almost any budget.
